What are daily routines for freelance work and why are they important?

The human mind requires organization in order to achieve certain goals on a daily basis. Without it, many would wander in their minds all day without doing anything. For this reason, there must be a structure of days and work tasks. No matter what you do it will make your life easier and allow you to relax.

Freelancing is a type of business that requires you to write your own daily/or weekly work structure. I recommend first writing on paper so you can meet yourself. The goal is to make consistent routines that will lead you to accomplish your goals. It may sound rigid but you will discipline yourself and achieve many things.

In the end, when you find out what are your effective daily routines you will feel the difference in your life.

Here are some of the daily routines that you should try to implement when you are a freelancer:

  • Start with the daily work on time. This doesn’t mean that you need to be awake at 5am, but define the time in the morning or afternoon when you are most productive. It isn’t necessary to start your work at 9am if you like working in the afternoon. The goal is to finish scheduled task for that day.
  • Have a well organized workspace. You need to have cleaned table to have focused mind on something. Try to make your working space productive with only necessary things for the work.
  • Write everything that you need to finish. Don’t assume that you will remember everything. By working many years as a freelancer, my notebook is the best place to quickly write and schedule something that needs to be done.
  • Respect your schedule. If you write something in your working plan then just do it. The reason of having a work plan is to better organize your life and stay focused in developing your business. If you cant follow the plan, and you are disorganized person think about the reasons behind that behaviour.
  • Find time to take a break from work. Besides work, make also time for relaxing. Take a walk, run, or just go to nearby caffee. It is important to have time to clear your mind so you don’t get too tired.
  • Invest in learning. Invest money, or just your time. Working as a freelancer requires learning new things and adapting.
  • Focus on work time. This means when you are working you are only focused on that. No phone calls, multitasking, or other.
  • Make time to stretch. Make time to stand up after 1 hour of working and stretch, or just to go to grab a glass of water.
  • Review finished daily tasks. After you finished your scheduled tasks, review them and think if you can better organize them for the next week. That is the point of planning because it will make you more productive.
  • Have a work life balance. This is the hard thing which sometimes even high experienced freelancers can’t achieve. Despite that, you should get a sense of where your private life starts and your work life ends. If you scheduled working time by 5pm that means that you will leave working space in exactly that time. That is crucial for maintaining your physical and mental health.
  • Don’t be hard on yourself. There will be days when you can finish the tasks faster, and there will be days where you don’t feel mentaly ok and you need to postpone the tasks. My experience from that situation is that you always try to do some easier part of the tasks, or just move the daily tasks to another day. Nothing is more important than you health. In situations where you think you didn’t finish the task perfect remember that usually: “Done is better than perfect.”.
